Classic Cabin Carpenter Bee Traps

This is my second trap from *The Best Bee Trap* company. I thought they were a bit expensive, but we recently had to replace our eaves, columns, and rails on our front porch because of these little bees. While the traditional block style works, these are so much prettier—just look at the shingling! We’re definitely getting more!

The "Best Bee Trap" really is the best bee trap—at least for carpenter bees. The design is simple: just screw the provided bottle into the bottom and attach the string to the top of the wooden portion. It functions perfectly because the bees fall into the bottle and can’t get out. It’s the size of a small birdhouse, which makes it unobtrusive. I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with carpenter bees.

Plain and simple—exactly what I needed. I hung mine outside early this year to catch any and all carpenter bees. I like that it’s cute but also effective. The container at the bottom was easy to slip on and off, and I also appreciate that it can be stored inside the wood part when not in use.

My mom is allergic to all bees, and we have carpenter bees and all kinds of others. I thought this would be a good way to help reduce the number of bees around. She visits often, so I wanted to take care of the problem. The wood quality is nice, though I expected the jar to be the size of a pint mason jar and glass. Instead, it’s smaller and plastic. Hopefully, it will still do the job! It comes with a hook and string for hanging, plus a hook on the back for wall mounting.

This is a simple design with just a couple of bee-sized holes that attract the bees. They fall into the plastic jar and can’t find their way out. It comes with a solid set of instructions and tips on how to use and place the trap. The trap also includes a string with a hook that can be screwed into the overhang of your house.

The first time I used one, it wasn’t working too well. What I didn’t know is that if it captures a bee, you should leave the bee in the jar. They continue to buzz around trying to find a way out, and this actually attracts other bees. After a couple of days, you’ll have quite a few bees trapped.

The instructions mention a glass jar, but the jar is plastic, which is just fine. My main concern was having to put it together, but I was happy to find that it came pre-assembled!

Nice little carpenter bee trap. The price point is similar to other products, and I like that it comes with everything you need. The instructions are helpful, especially the photo showing the best places to hang the traps—it’s a huge help.

One thing I found a bit annoying is that the instructions say, "Simply screw on the included glass jar..." but the jar is actually plastic, not glass. The trap itself is a nice, attractive wooden box. It’s well-constructed and has a nice design to mount the plastic bottle.

The product description mentions "natural cedar construction," but I’m not sure what that means, because it’s made of pine, not cedar. It does look good hanging, similar to how you’d want a birdhouse or bird feeder to look. Don’t forget to read all the neat tips and history information on the box!

If you put these out early where you see the males fighting for territory, the females will typically get in the trap first, and then the males follow later. I’ve had to watch their patterns closely, as they’ve become a real issue at my vacation house over the past few years. I use both hornet spray and traps—both work to keep these pesky bees from destroying my property.

This one is hands down the best. My other traps maybe caught two bees, but this one filled up in just 10 days. I’m so impressed!

Third day after hanging the traps, all the carpenter beas were inside them. Extremely pleased with the product!

It’s a little too early for carpenter bees to be out yet, but these traps look and feel sturdy, so I’m confident they’ll last well. They’re easy to use, and the maker has studied carpenter bees, designed, and tested several types of traps. These are what worked best. He explains how to place and use them, and it’s mostly about putting them in the right spots and just leaving them there until the end of the year.

Keeps the carpenter bees away (for the most part!) and is easy to put up and empty when it gets full—or when the season is over, whichever comes first!

Good quality and easy to mount, either from a string or by screwing it directly onto something. I’m waiting to see how it works when the bees come out. I’ve got it hung outside to start weathering a bit, as the instructions suggest, so we’ll see. I got several different shaped ones, so we’ll see if that makes a difference. I do like that it comes with helpful mounting tips for success, like mounting it in the sun, etc.—little things I didn’t know about. I bought a bunch of these, so time will tell!

Quality craftsmanship and great design. I love that this is from a small business. It’s a unique idea that addresses a niche problem while still maintaining a nice aesthetic.

The natural alternative—no pesticides or chemicals, just hang and wait. It came mostly pre-assembled and was up in minutes. I really appreciate that it included a hook and string because many of these traps make you find your own hardware and hanging methods. The inclusion of that little hook and cord was a nice touch. I have a perennial problem with carpenter bees, and I’ve tried all kinds of traps, fillers, and other methods. This trap is pleasant to look at and should do a great job once the bees wake up in the spring. It’s important to note that if you get a wasp or other critter inside, it may deter the carpenter bees from entering. So, it’s a good practice to clean the jar out if there’s anything but carpenter bees inside.

Very nicely constructed and designed. I’m pleasantly surprised by the quality of this little house-shaped carpenter bee trap. It’s the wrong season right now, so I can’t comment on its effectiveness yet, but I’ve read good things about how these work and am excited to give it a try. Those pesky carpenter bees come back every year, and this will be my first time using one of these.

The design is so well thought out that they’ve applied for a patent, so I’m thinking this is definitely worth using. It has a nice, removable plastic jar with a unique hanging attachment that slides in. It also comes with two ways to hang it—either on a wall or using the hook eye that goes into the top for hanging. I’ll be hanging mine on the eve of the porch. Definitely give it a try!

After a decade of watching carpenter bees come and go on their bi-annual cabin-boring cycle, I finally caved and got a few of these traps, never expecting much. Within a week and a half, I was emptying full bottles. I’m a believer now!

This trap seems as well-made as possible, considering you need bare wood to attract the bees, which usually means a shorter lifespan. The slot for the plastic cup holder is unique—I'm not sure if it was really necessary, but it’s there, nonetheless. I have no doubt it will do its job in capturing those little drilling monsters that stray from their forest/dead tree path.

A tip: If you have them, place a couple of dead carpenter bees in the cup before mounting it. It also helps to rub them around the holes and push them through to get their scent everywhere. Enjoy your cabin a little less hole-free this coming season!
